I’d like to set up a camera on my 2nd floor balcony that would overlook a section of the parking lot I usually park my cars in. Here are a few details of my situation…
-
My apartment complex is owned privately & the community is gated.
-
I will not be running wires through the walls/floors, nor be drilling or altering any part of the property in any way.
-
My balcony overlooks a good section of the parking lot, which includes reserved parking spaces, as well as first-come-first-serve spaces.
-
The area I plan to capture with the camera will include only the parking lot; other units will not come out in the footage.
-
I live in Corona, California.
I’d like to know if it’s legal for me to set up a security camera on my outdoor patio considering I live in an private apartment complex. Also, any thought on what management might say if they notice it & how I can refute anything they say about it not being allowed.
Here’s why I’d like to set up a camera for anyone interested…
Less than a month after moving in, my car was towed for “not displaying a proper permit.” This is BS because I have no reason to remove a pass from a car that needs it all times while being inside the community. I paid the hefty towing fee of $370 to retrieve my car from the private towing company that is contracted by my apartment complex to tow vehicles without a parking pass. They are called in by a private security company that is contracted to patrol the complex. I asked the towing company for a picture of my car that they are required to take by law before towing & they denied my request, saying that “We don’t have to hand over the pictures to you if we don’t want to.” After talking to some neighbors, many of them described to me a similar situation, where their car got towed for not having a pass that they are certain did. One person even had this happen to them 5 times in 1 year!! Upon bringing it up with management, they said “We can’t do anything about stolen passes & property unless police find that that is the case. Are you sure you didn’t misplace it?” A sheriff deputy I spoke to said they couldn’t do anything unless there was an eye witness willing to come forward or video evidence. So basically, I need to catch these bastards in the act so that I can build a case against them, or at least keep my shit from getting stolen or towed. Did I mention that my other car was broken into & had everything stolen from it? They even stole my nephew’s baby clothes for god’s sake. Oh & the logo on my 3rd car was stolen too.
Anyways, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for listening to my rant.
