What are the major genres/categories of anime?

So I’m trying to organise my anime list into many genre and I tried doing my research but it just doesn’t seem to make much sense.

There’s so many ways you can do this, but all I want is a small number of categories so I can see what type of anime I watch the most.

A lot of genre seems to overlap each other in various ways, but so far, the below is my best attempt of differentiating the list so it’s evenly spread but also have distinct characteristics.

Shounen

The typical shounen we know? Anime that follows the shounen storyline I heard that shounen should be distinguished as series that is/was published in Shounen jump but then the list would be a mess. E.g. Boku no Hero, Kill la Kill(?), One Piece, SDS

Romcom

This is like generally lighthearted romance where it focuses more on the comedy side. E.g. Kaguya, Baka to Test, Tsurezure, Nisekoi, Working(?), Nozaki-kun

Romance

Romcom but less of comedy and more on drama surrounding relationship (and basically serious shit happening) The reason I separated this and romcom is because Golden Time and Kaguya for eg doesn’t feel like it should be in the same category. E.g. Toradora, Bunny Girl, Golden Time, Sakurasou, Domestic(?)

Drama

Little to no romance element, or is just not the main point(?) of the story. E.g. Sangatsu no Lion, Anohana, NHK, Violet Evergarden, Oregairu

Action/Adventure

Honestly I’m not too sure how to differentiate between them. This may overlap with shounen category. Pretty much any action shows other than shounen (So it’s pretty vague) E.g. Log Horizon, Danmachi, DxD, OPM, Noragami, Fate, Youjo Senki, Gurren Lagann

Maybe I can make a sub category Isekai(adventure)

Comedy

Shows that focuses primarily on comedy. Generally lighthearted. E.g. Daily lives of high school boys, Grand Blue, Konosuba, Golden Boy

Thirller

Usually Fast paced, often dark and intense story development. Horror could fit in here. E.g. Psycho-pass, Parasyte, Re:Zero, Code Geass, AOT, Mirai Nikki, Madoka(Drama?)

Slice of Life

No particular main storyline. Light hearted and slow story progression. E.g. Aria, Hyouka(?)

As you can see, there’s heaps of flaws especially regarding the ambiguity of shounen and romance genre. Also there’s some shows (Shokugeki, Monogatari) that doesn’t rly fit anywhere.

What categories do you think there should be so no two series in same category feels like “They shouldn’t be together”?
