This 7 x 10.5″ Pop Fly print now live for one week only. This piece has been simmering for a while and what’s funny is that it turned out so differently than how it had been in my head all along. I just love when sports intersect with pop culture and Michael Jordan was a pop culture ICON in the 90’s and never was there a bigger collective “Huh???” than we he quit basketball at the height of his fame to pursue minor league baseball.-Residents of the planet Krypton had no special strengths or abilities – they were regular beings. It’s Only when Krypton’s most famous resident left the planet that he gained his unique powers. That’s when Kal-El became Superman.Basketball superstar Michael Jordan was the greatest athlete of his generation. He was the Superman of his game, bounding through the air from impossible distances, a nearly invincible offensive player, he elevated the entire game just by playing it.In a Superman-in-Reverse type of move, Michael Jordan gave up those god-like superpowers and became a struggling double-A ballplayer on the dirt of a baseball field. He played for a year in the minors, hit a tick above .200, and then bowed out of baseball.Jordan moved from the air to the dirt to honor his late father, and Superman’s father sent him away from the doomed planet of Krypton to save him. In both their stories, and in baseball as a whole, what’s underneath it all – a love story about a father and a son.
