So I just finished the series and I decided to browse this subreddit to see who you guys think Momoi ended up with since there really wasn’t an answer given. Now, I’m going to say that this is from the perspective of a Momoi x Kuroko shipper, but how exactly is Kuroko x Momoi not the endgame couple, if there was ever going to be one in a sports show like this?
I understand why people ship Aomine x Momoi or even Akashi x Momoi… lots of people think Akashi or Aomine are cooler characters than Kuroko which obviously means that they would want Momoi, really the only girl in the series, to end up with their favortite character. I totally get all that.
But based on Momoi’s interactions with everyone in the series across all media platforms that we’ve seen, how is it even possible to say that Momoi isn’t most likely going to end up with Kuroko chronologically after the series ends?
Sure, Momoi and Aomine had some relatively deep conversations, but not once did Momoi show real romantic interest in him. The main arguement for the Momoi x Aomine pairing that I’ve seen on this subreddit is that Momoi chose to follow Aomine over Kuroko after middle school, but isn’t that primarily because Aomine couldn’t take care of himself alone? They were also childhood friends so it makes sense that she would naturally want to help him out after middle school. No shade towards anyone, but if that’s the best evidence this ship has got than I just don’t get the ship at all. Aomine is a cool dude… but him and Momoi literally have zero romantic moments throughout the entire show. Compare this to Kuroko, who Momoi literally considers as her boyfriend for the entirity of the series, and it’s just not a fair comparison. As for Akashi and Momoi, I also couldn’t find any real evidence in the story that either harbor feelings for one another.
Again, I totally understand why people ship Momoi with Aomine or Akashi, they are definitly cool and interesting characters (especially compared to the sometimes bland Kuroko), but what I don’t understand is why people claim that Kuroko x Momoi isn’t the most likely ship to happen when ALL of the evidence points to exactly that.
I know about the scene with the dog and how it could potentially mean that Kuroko doesn’t like Momoi back, but the rest of the evidence in the show, manga, and LN’s is literally all in favor of Momoi x Kuroko. If you’ve watched the show you’d obviously know about their history and how Momoi literally considers herself Kuroko’s girlfriend throughout the entire show. They have many romantic moments including a date story between them.
The only arguement against Kuroko x Momoi that I’ve seen is that Kuroko might not like her back. So despite all of the evidence, just because Kuroko hasn’t openly stated that he loves her back means that he isn’t the frontrunner by a mile to end up with her after the series is over?
I get why people might like other characters better than Kuroko, but I haven’t seen any firm evidence to support any of the other ships, whereas Kuroko x Momoi has like 60 episodes worth of hard evidence that the two like each other.
At the end of the day it’s your life and ship who you wanna ship, but for me, regardless of which character I like more, I’m going to support the ship that has a lot of evidence for it happening rather than ships that have next to nothing in the show that make me think that they will ever happen. If you think Momoi abandons her feelings for Kuroko and randomly decides she wants to be with Aomine romantically then by all means I’m not stopping you, I just don’t understand how, based on the series, one could say that ‘Momoi x anyone but Kuroko’ is the most likely pairing from Kuroko no Basket.
It’s unfortunate that the author kind of had to leave the ending ambigious due to the yaoi fangirls in Japan, because I think Momoi and Kuroko derserved some closure for all their moments throughout the series. Super fun show though overall, way funnier than I expected.
Sorry for the rant, it was a great show and as of right now my favorite sports anime! Now, on to Haikyuu!
